Strand: the intertidal zone between ocean and dry land where the positioning of things remains uncertain; anything left there is said to be ‘stranded’, including sand. When a person enters this space, they are outside of life; their time there is limited. They know it, and act with a heightened sense of being outside the bounds of normal life. Nothing on the strand can be taken for granted. Everything is soaked with the simultaneous energy of departure and arrival.
