Strand

Strand: the intertidal zone between ocean and dry land where the positioning of things remains uncertain; anything left there is said to be ‘stranded’, including sand. When a person enters this space, they are outside of life; their time there is limited. They know it, and act with a heightened sense of being outside the bounds of normal life. Nothing on the strand can be taken for granted. Everything is soaked with the simultaneous energy of departure and arrival. p1320822
