Nut: a power of separation and knocking. In animals with bones it creates vertebrae out of solid twigs of bone (the correlation with trees is ancient). In plants, with twigs of wood, it creates ‘vertebrae’ or “knocks” of wood: nuts. As an energy, nutting is to bend inward around a field of substance until it forms a sphere; when the sphere is complete it is represented by a body, or meat, which rattles inside it in the way dice made of vertebrae rattle in a cup. Fates hang in the balance.
