Carpet: the bedded form (kerp) of a seed (or corn), which makes a decorated, woven covering of crops (and bounty) for a field; this is the sacred skin of the earth that no man should cut, to bare her red, brown, black or yellow flesh, without first making the appropriate gestures that will bind it again, both physically and socially. The floor covering called a carpet is a distant echo of this ancient power, one of the gifts of the understanding that wanderers brought from the east.
