Dawn: the period between darkness and sunrise, as well as the colour that extends this moment of waiting deep into the day. In the case of poppies, which carry the red of the dawn, their dark seed heads, and the developing black seeds within them, form the kernels of the next year’s flames. For the poppy, dawn comes once a year. It has little in the way of a day, as its sun is black.
